U.S. and Iran Reach Preliminary Deal on $3 Billion in Frozen Assets

Australia increased the maximum penalty for social media companies that fail to block users under 16. The change follows evidence that many children continued to access platforms after a nationwide restriction took effect in December.

Officials introduced the legislation in December, barring children from major platforms. Teens have used methods such as drawing on facial hair to bypass age-verification systems and employing VPNs. Dozens of other countries have begun considering or adopting similar measures.

Researchers tracked 400 children before and after the ban and recorded little change in social media use. The authors stated the measure was unlikely to produce the intended benefits for teen mental health.
