The government ended the June 12 restriction that had forced Anthropic to cut public access. The company will restore availability on July 1 after agreeing to security protocols with the Commerce Department.
The U.S. government has lifted the requirement that Anthropic obtain a license before exporting its Mythos and Fable models abroad. The AI company said it would begin restoring access on Wednesday, July 1.
On June 12 the models were added to the list of export-restricted technologies, which made them unavailable to foreign nationals without special approval. Complying with the rule at scale proved impractical, so Anthropic ended public access.
Anthropic had already pledged similar steps months earlier. Mythos had been released to a select group of organizations in April. A version called Fable reached the public in June with added guardrails.
Last week Lutnick cleared Mythos for select customers approved by the White House. OpenAI’s latest models were also released only to groups approved by the Trump administration. An executive order issued in June called for review of AI models before release.
Dean W. Ball, who recently took a policy role at OpenAI, criticized the order. Asian firms Fugu and Tulongfeng have released models approaching Mythos-level capabilities, increasing pressure on the U.S.

Mark Zuckerberg told employees Thursday that development of AI agent technology has fallen behind internal targets. The company also paused a mandatory employee monitoring program last month after a leak and cut 10 percent of its workforce in May.
