A free kick from Malik Tillman sealed the national team’s 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday. Tillman discussed the kick with teammates Antonee Robinson and Tyler Adams before striking the ball over a stationary wall. The shot marked his first World Cup goal and came after he had already recorded an assist against Paraguay.
recovery A defender’s cleat tore through Tillman’s sock during the match, forcing a midgame change. Teammate Weston McKennie said Tillman refused rubbing alcohol on the cut. Tillman later described the injury as “just pain” and “nothing too bad.”
National team coach Mauricio Pochettino moved him to central midfield for the tournament, deeper than his usual attacking role. He has since contributed to buildup play and defensive work. Captain Tim Ream said Tillman has been “our best player everywhere on the field” outside of goals.

His brother Timothy said the transition brought the first real setback of his career. Timothy advised him to prepare thoroughly for the World Cup. The younger Tillman has since shown improved confidence and consistency. The Round of 16 match against Belgium is scheduled for Monday night.
