U.S. Military Strikes Disrupt Alleged Drug Boats Linked to Cartels in Eastern Pacific, Killing Five
The U.S. military conducted two strikes on suspected drug vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing five people across attacks announced on Wednesday and Saturday. The operations are part of a monthslong campaign that has now resulted in 205 deaths.
nypost.comThe U.S. military carried out a strike on Saturday against a boat accused of smuggling drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing three men. The attack marked the fourth such strike in a single week. U.S. Southern Command said the vessel was engaged in narco-trafficking operations and operated by a designated terrorist organization. The command provided no evidence for the allegation.
A separate strike on Wednesday targeted another alleged drug boat in the same region and killed two people. The two operations brought the total death toll from the series of strikes to 205. The campaign began in early September and has included additional attacks announced on Tuesday and Friday. U.S. Southern Command stated the Saturday strike was directed by Gen. Francis L. Donovan.
The Trump administration has declared that the U.S. is at armed conflict with Latin American drug cartels, saying they are behind the flow of drugs into American communities. Video released by the military on social media shows a small vessel floating in the ocean before it is hit and engulfed in a fireball.
