U.S. Mint to produce $1 coin with President Trump portrait for 250th anniversary

The U.S. Mint will begin striking a new $1 coin featuring President Trump. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled the design on Wednesday. The coin commemorates the United States' 250th anniversary and carries the dates 1776-2026 along the bottom edge.

It includes the phrase "In God We Trust" near the center. The front shows President Trump in a suit and tie with the word "LIBERTY" along the top edge. The reverse depicts the traditional bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States with the number "250" integrated into the design.

The coin will have a gold-like finish but contains no precious metals. It is being minted in Philadelphia. The Treasury cited the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act as the legal basis for the design.

The 2020 statute authorizes special $1 coins for the semiquincentennial but prohibits portraits of living persons on the reverse. The coin is scheduled to become available in the fall and is already in production, a Treasury Department spokesperson said. CBS News reported that the Trump administration previously proposed the same design for the semiquincentennial coin.

CBS News also reported that in May the Treasury Department said it was considering issuing a $250 bill featuring President Trump, which would require a change in federal law.
