U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Deployments Extend Beyond Six Months

The USS Gerald R. Ford returned to Naval Station Norfolk on May 16, 2026, after completing a 326-day deployment. The carrier operated in the North Sea, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Red Sea during the mission. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth greeted the crew and announced that Carrier Strike Group 12 would receive the Presidential Unit Citation.

He stated the award recognized extraordinary heroism during Operation Epic Fury.

As of May 19, 2026, the USS Abraham Lincoln has been at sea for 179 days. The carrier was redirected from the South China Sea to the Middle East in January 2026 ahead of Operation Epic Fury. The Navy previously considered six-month deployments standard. Extended missions have become more common due to limited carrier availability and ongoing operations.

The USS Abraham Lincoln previously held the post-Vietnam record with a 295-day deployment that ended in January 2020. Several carriers during the Vietnam War spent 300 days or longer at sea. The USS Midway holds the all-time record at 332 days during 1972-73.

The USS Gerald R. Ford's recent deployment surpassed the previous modern benchmark. Bryan Clark, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, stated that maintenance delays and limited shipyard capacity are driving longer deployments. He noted that carrier operating cycles last 36 months with maintenance periods of nine to 18 months.
