U.S. and China Reach Trade Agreement Keeping Tariffs in Place

U.S. officials described the Trump-Xi summit as delivering stability and continued tariffs on Chinese goods. The same statement said Washington is largely shifting its approach from changing China’s economic model toward managed trade.

Officials added that the administration will seek public comment on possible tariff changes for $30 billion of Chinese goods. The review covers items already subject to earlier tariff actions.

The statement noted that the focus has moved away from structural changes in China’s economy. Officials framed the new direction as emphasizing managed trade relations instead.
