The U.S. Postal Service released a special collection of stamps commemorating Mattel's Barbie dolls on Saturday. USPS representatives promoted the stamps Saturday morning at the Austin Hilton in Texas during the National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention.
The five stamps depict Barbie as a surgeon, paleontologist, nurse, sign language teacher, and engineer. " Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps in collaboration with Mattel. The collection is the first Barbie issue since 1999, when a stamp showed the doll wearing a red pillbox hat and pearls in the style of first lady Jackie Kennedy.
Collector Cheryl Wilson Patton traveled from Phoenix, Arizona, for the event. A nurse herself, she said her favorites are the 1961 registered nurse Barbie and the 1973 surgeon Barbie. Patton described the annual gathering as a "Barbie family" that draws participants from Spain, Japan, Canada, and elsewhere.
