U.S. Producer Prices Rose 1.4 Percent in April

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the producer price index climbed 1.4 percent in April after seasonal adjustments. Wholesale inflation rose to 6 percent on a 12-month basis, marking the largest such increase since December 2022. Energy costs accounted for about 75 percent of the total increase in goods prices.

Gas prices rose 15.6 percent during the period. The April figures come as energy costs have increased since late February with the start of the Iran War. A new poll released on Tuesday showed public views on the economy ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The 6 percent annual wholesale inflation rate represents the highest reading in that category since December 2022. Officials have previously attributed recent energy price movements to international developments. The report provides a snapshot of cost pressures at the wholesale level before they potentially reach consumers.
