U.S. Recreational Boaters Face Higher Fuel Costs Ahead of Summer Season
Gasoline and diesel prices remain elevated compared with last year, prompting some boat owners to shorten trips or alter plans. Industry groups report that most boaters still intend to use their vessels this season.
foxnews.comRecreational boaters across the United States are encountering higher fuel prices as they prepare for the summer season. On a recent afternoon in Dexter Township, Michigan, Malik Amine and his brother prepared their family pontoon boat on Portage Lake. The vessel holds 52 gallons, and Amine said he would purchase only the fuel needed rather than fill the tank before Memorial Day weekend.
A gallon of regular gasoline cost an average of 34 percent more on the most recent Friday than a year earlier, according to motor club AAA. Diesel fuel prices rose 53 percent over the same period. Ethanol-free gasoline, preferred by many boaters, sells for 20 cents to $1 more per gallon than regular fuel.
One station near Portage Lake listed ethanol-free fuel at $7 per gallon. The National Marine Manufacturers Association estimates that 100 million Americans participate in boating annually, supporting a $230 billion industry.
Ellen Bradley, chief brand officer of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, said conversations with boaters indicate most still plan to go out but some are adjusting behavior. Adjustments include traveling shorter distances, operating at lower speeds, or spending more time anchored.
Neil and Kathleen Donohoe, who live aboard a 50-foot diesel-powered vessel, reported that filling the boat’s 1,500-gallon tank has become significantly more expensive. They plan to remain in the Chesapeake Bay area rather than travel farther north this summer.
The Seattle Sailing Club said its fuel costs rose 10.7 percent since the start of the conflict. In late May the marina charged $7.99 per gallon for diesel, up from $6.50 in April. Office manager Lindsey Brown noted the club enters its busy season and may see further effects if prices stay high or increase.
