U.S. Service Member Killed in Iraq; U.S. Strikes Hit Iranian Targets for Eighth Night

A third U.S. service member was killed in Iraq on Saturday during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. The death raised the U.S. military toll to 17 since fighting began in February.

American forces also recovered unidentified remains near the site of an Iranian attack in Jordan on July 17 that had already killed two service members and left one missing. U.S. forces carried out their eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iran on Sunday.

The strikes targeted coastal surveillance and air defense facilities, maritime capabilities, and missile and drone storage sites. They also hit Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps units that launched the July 17 attacks in Jordan. President Trump ordered the new round of airstrikes late Saturday to degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and to punish the Guard Corps forces involved in the Jordan attacks.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Saturday that Tehran had suspended its commitments under the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States last month. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the seven-day average flow through the Strait of Hormuz remained just under seven million barrels a day, with another seven million barrels moving through bypass pipelines.

He added that almost all public data showing reduced traffic was incorrect.

The national average gasoline price reached more than $3.99 a gallon on Sunday, up from more than $3.87 a week earlier, according to AAA. The U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a security alert Sunday stating that Jordanian authorities had evacuated the international airport and seaport in Aqaba over a specific and credible threat.

Jordanian government spokesperson Mohammad Al-Momani said no threats had been recorded in recent hours and that both facilities were operating normally.
