U.S. Strikes Over 80 Targets in Iran; Iran Hits U.S. Bases in Bahrain and Kuwait

The U.S. military launched strikes against more than 80 targets in Iran on Wednesday in retaliation for attacks on three commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The strikes hit air defense systems, radars and more than 60 small boats used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

The U.S. also revoked a license that had allowed Iran to sell oil openly for U.S. dollars. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated they targeted U.S. military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait on Wednesday in retaliation.

Sirens sounded in Kuwait as air defenses engaged incoming fire. Bahrain sounded missile alert sirens a second and third time Wednesday morning. One liquefied natural gas tanker traveling off the coast of Oman was hit, caught fire and sustained damage.

Military said its latest strikes against Iran are over and will hold Tehran “accountable” for violations. Funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed February 28 at age 86, took place Wednesday morning in Najaf, Iraq.

An official ceremony had been held Tuesday night at Najaf International Airport, and funeral prayers occurred Tuesday at the Holy Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, Iran.

Khamenei’s body will be returned to Iran for burial Thursday at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.
