U.S. military conducts strikes on Iranian sites near Strait of Hormuz following cargo ship incident

U.S. Central Command stated that military aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites around the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. The command described the action as a response to an Iranian drone attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely the previous day. One drone struck the vessel while it was exiting the strait along the Omani coast.

The strikes represent the first U.S. military action against Iranian targets since the signing of a memorandum of understanding the previous week that declared an end to the war. President Trump posted on Truth Social that three of the four drones used against the ship were shot down and that damage occurred but the vessel continued its journey.

Iranian media reported that a projectile struck an area around a pier in Sirik in southern Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that its naval and air forces repelled the attack and forced the invading forces to retreat. The IRGC added that the aggression will not go unanswered and that any further action will face a harsh response at a time and place of its choosing.

CENTCOM forces continue to provide safe passage coordination and support to commercial vessels transiting the strait. The U.S. military remains present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect, according to a U.S. Central Command statement reported by Axios.

The agreement signed on June 17 called for Iran to use its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days. Before the strikes, President Trump told reporters at the White House that he did not like the fact that Iran took a shot and said the U.S. response would become clear.
