U.S. Task Force Director Says Country Can Host Expanded 64-Team World Cup

The executive director of the White House Task Force on the World Cup stated that the United States has the stadiums and infrastructure to host a 64-team tournament. He also indicated the country could consider bidding for the 2038 event. The director said the U.S. spent a couple billion dollars on preparations compared with tens of billions spent by other host nations.

He added that existing venues would allow the country to accommodate an increase from 48 to 64 teams.

Background on future hosting cycle The 2026 tournament is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. FIFA has already awarded the 2030 finals to Europe, Africa and South America and the 2034 finals to Saudi Arabia. The director said he has discussed a possible 2038 bid with President Trump and cabinet secretaries.

He noted that the United States would be well positioned because of its venues and recent fan reception.

Comments on tournament atmosphere The director said the early weeks of the tournament have shown strong international interest. He described the response on social media and among first-time visitors as positive. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that President Trump is expected to attend the final scheduled for New Jersey on 19 July.

The director added that the president prefers to keep attendance plans private until closer to the match.
