U.S. Trade Representative Says No Immediate Tariffs on Semiconductors
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated Friday that tariffs on semiconductors will not be imposed immediately. Greer spoke at a Micron facility event and emphasized the need for proper timing and scale.
SemaforU.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Friday that the United States will not impose tariffs on semiconductors in the near term. Greer made the remarks at an event at Micron’s Virginia facility marking production of the country’s most advanced memory chip. He told reporters that protection for domestic facilities matters, but timing and scale are more critical.
“So there’s not an immediate tariff coming in place tomorrow or next week,” Greer said. He added that having tariffs on semiconductors is important but must be applied correctly. The comments follow earlier threats of tariffs as high as 100 percent on imported chips. Greer noted that recent diplomatic activity with China does not alter the administration’s approach.
Greer said talks next week in Mexico on the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement will focus on rules of origin and economic security. He indicated it remains uncertain whether he will attend those meetings.
