U.S. weekly jobless claims rise to four-month high
Initial jobless claims increased to 240,000 for the week ending May 30. Nonfarm business sector labor productivity fell 0.8 percent in the first quarter after seasonal adjustment.
pbs.orgInitial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 240,000 in the week ended May 30, the highest level since late January, government data showed Thursday. Continuing claims, a measure of the number of people receiving ongoing benefits, increased by 27,000 to 1.92 million in the week ended May 23.
Productivity revision Labor productivity in the nonfarm business sector declined at a 0.8 percent annual rate in the first quarter, revised down from the previously reported 1.3 percent gain, the data showed. Unit labor costs rose at a 5.7 percent rate in the quarter, higher than the prior 4.7 percent estimate.
The figures are released weekly by the Labor Department and are among the earliest indicators of labor-market conditions.
