U.S. World Cup host cities accelerate transit projects ahead of 2026 matches

Seattle opened the Crosslake Connection light rail line on March 28. More than 200,000 people rode it on opening day, the second-busiest day in Sound Transit history. The line crosses Lake Washington on a floating bridge and links Seattle with Bellevue and Redmond.
The line will serve fans attending six World Cup matches at Lumen Field between June 15 and July 6. Sound Transit used the tournament date to finish a project that was three years behind schedule. The $1 billion project was funded by a 2008 voter-approved package, not by World Cup-related spending.
