A study of 120 nearly identical Uber Reserve trips found insurance and operational fees ranged from $13.75 to $50. Uber said the fee covers overall expenses rather than individual trip costs.
cnbc.comInsurance and operational fees charged by Uber on similar trips varied by more than three times, according to an analysis of 120 rides completed over two years. Len Sherman, an executive in residence and adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, examined trips taken by one driver between Ithaca, New York, and an airport in Syracuse.
The trips used the same Tesla Model Y, followed essentially the same route, covered nearly identical distances, and began and ended at similar locations. Across the roughly 60-mile trips, the reported commercial auto insurance and operational charge ranged from $13.75 to $50.
Sherman said identical trips by the same driver, car, and route should not produce such wide variation in reported insurance costs.
Fee structure and company response An Uber spokesperson told Business Insider that the fee covers government-mandated insurance for rides. The spokesperson said the amount can vary due to the trip's origin city and distance, duration, time of day, and weather.
Uber states in driver earnings breakdowns that the fee is an estimate and does not reflect insurance expenses on individual trips but goes toward overall insurance and operational expenses.
Industry-wide insurance costs Insurance accounts for about 21 percent of the average ride-hailing fare, according to a Gridwise study of first-quarter 2026 trips. Drivers received 53 percent of fares and the app received 15 percent. In the Western United States, the share of fares set aside for insurance fell nearly 21 percent between the first quarter of 2025 and the same period in 2026 after California reduced insurance requirements at the start of 2026.
Over the same period, ride-hailing companies raised platform fees and cut some rider prices while raising driver pay 1.2 percent on average.
