UCLA Pitcher Uses Toy Dinosaur During Games
A UCLA freshman pitcher carries a small plastic dinosaur to the mound as part of a pre-pitch routine. The item has drawn attention from fans and media ahead of the team's NCAA Tournament opener.
New York PostUCLA freshman pitcher Angel Cervantes places a small plastic triceratops near the back of the mound each time he pitches. The toy, named Jerry, emerged from Cervantes' back pocket during the Big Ten Tournament championship game last weekend, when he threw five shutout innings.
Cervantes first obtained the dinosaur during a photography class last spring. He keeps the item in his pocket and uses it as part of a breathing exercise before certain pitches. The routine involves placing a hand on his cap visor, looking down, closing his eyes, and opening them to see the dinosaur. He said the practice helps him stay calm on an 0-2 count or when the moment feels large.
Cervantes is scheduled to pitch for top-ranked UCLA in its NCAA Tournament regional opener against Saint Mary's at noon Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The regional also includes Virginia Tech and Cal Poly. UCLA coach John Savage said the presence of the toy has helped Cervantes avoid taking himself too seriously.
Umpires have allowed the item during equipment checks. He has posted a 4-1 record and 3.86 ERA in 18 appearances this season.
