UCLA Rower Manages Rare Neurological Disorder While Competing
UCLA rower Claire Prindiville continues to train and compete after being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. She has described maintaining a daily routine that includes early training and monitoring symptoms.
New York PostUCLA rower Claire Prindiville wakes each morning uncertain whether symptoms of a neurological condition will return. Doctors have informed her of a 60 percent chance that the symptoms could recur and possibly worsen. m. most days and performs a small celebratory jump beside her bed.
She told The California Post that the action helps her begin the day feeling grateful for her mobility.
While in high school, Prindiville experienced persistent headaches that led to an emergency room visit. She later developed leg weakness, vision loss in her left eye, and difficulty controlling bodily functions during a swim meet. Tests revealed severe swelling in her brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve.
She was diagnosed with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease, known as MOGAD, a rare autoimmune disorder with no known cause or cure.
After treatment with steroids and recovery, Prindiville joined the UCLA rowing team as a walk-on. She advanced to a scholarship position in the top varsity boat. She now trains for the Big Ten Championships scheduled for Saturday in Indianapolis. Her coach noted that her technical improvement has been impressive.
Prindiville said she focuses on maximizing physical activity while symptoms remain in remission. She stated that she does not want the condition to determine the course of her life.
