UConn Coach Dan Hurley Addresses UNC Job Rumors Ahead of National Championship Game

The University of Connecticut men's basketball team is scheduled to compete in the national championship game on Monday night. Amid this, speculation has arisen regarding the next head coach for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, following the firing of Hubert Davis.

One name mentioned in connection with the UNC position is UConn head coach Dan Hurley, who has guided the Huskies to three national title game appearances over the past four years.

In an interview on Sunday with The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman, Hurley addressed the rumors directly. He indicated his intention to stay with UConn at the college level.

“I’m a UConn coach till the end," Hurley said. "Maybe the NBA someday, down the line, but I’m a UConn coach, man.”

Hurley's coaching background includes positions at the high school and college levels. He began his college coaching career at Wagner College, followed by a stint at the University of Rhode Island, and has been at UConn since 2018.

Two offseasons ago, Hurley considered an offer to coach in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers. After evaluation, he declined the offer and returned to UConn. In July 2024, Hurley signed a six-year contract extension with UConn, which extends through the 2029-30 season. Hurley is 53 years old.

The UNC head coaching vacancy remains open, with the program seeking a replacement for Davis. UConn's national championship game against an opponent yet to be specified in reports will proceed as planned. Hurley's commitment to UConn provides stability for the program as it enters the title contest.

The stakes for UConn include the opportunity to secure another national title under Hurley's leadership. For UNC, filling the coaching position will influence recruiting and team performance in the upcoming seasons. No immediate changes to Hurley's status have been reported, and his contract terms suggest continuity at UConn absent any developments.
