UFC to Hold $60M Fight Card on White House South Lawn for U.S. 250th Anniversary
The UFC will host a fight card on the White House South Lawn on June 14 to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The event is expected to cost around $60 million and draw 5,000 on-site attendees.
NewsweekThe UFC will stage a fight card on the White House South Lawn on June 14 to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The event will feature a full arena-style build that includes an Octagon, staging, seating and extensive infrastructure. Approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend on site, with tens of thousands more gathered nearby.
The production is projected to cost around $60 million, and UFC CEO Dana White has stated that the promotion will cover the full expense. White has also said the company expects to spend about $700,000 to replace the grass after the event. The figure reflects the use of pre-grown, ready-to-play sod rather than slower restoration methods.
Trey Rogers, professor of turfgrass management at Michigan State University, told Newsweek that the turf replacement cost is comparable to expenses for concerts at other major venues. He noted that organizers typically assume the existing grass will need full replacement once an event of this scale concludes.
The overall cost accounts for the size of the area, transport, installation and the work of specialist contractors, Rogers said.
He added that the price, while appearing high, aligns with similar projects at large stadiums. Crews plan to restore the lawn almost immediately after the event using specialized machinery. Rogers described equipment that can scrape away damaged sod, leave the grade level and lay large new pieces in a short time.
This sod-replacement method is standard at stadiums that host concerts and other non-sporting events, allowing the surface to return to a broadcast-ready condition quickly. The White House lawn is therefore expected to show little lasting sign of the June 14 card once the work is complete.
