Uganda military chief says Museveni will decide on reopening of Nation Media Group outlets still off air

Uganda's military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba said President Yoweri Museveni will make the final decision on any agreement to reopen Nation Media Group outlets currently off air. In a statement posted on X on June 29, Kainerugaba said talks continue with allies in the United Kingdom and Europe on the possible return of NTV Uganda and Daily Monitor.
"As comrade Andrew Mwenda said, we are having discussions with our allies in the UK and Europe about re-opening both NTV and Daily Monitor," Kainerugaba wrote.
"We shall take the results of these discussions to Mzee for final approval," he added, referring to Museveni. Several Nation Media Group outlets, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Dembe FM and KFM, went off air after reports of a security operation. The Uganda Communications Commission said it was seeking verified information on the circumstances of the shutdown.
Executive Director Nyombi Thembo stated that consultations with government stakeholders remain ongoing and urged the public to stay calm while facts are established. Nation Media Group operates television, radio and digital platforms across East Africa. AllAfrica reported the remarks amid the shutdown of the listed stations.
