Advocate Erias Lukwago was abducted by members of the Special Forces Command, according to the Uganda Law Society. AllAfrica reported that he was allegedly subjected to torture before being arraigned before a magistrate's court and remanded to Luzira Prison. The incident prompted an extraordinary meeting of lawyers in Kampala.
Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua and Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde addressed the gathering. Karua said cross-border abductions and enforced disappearances have become increasingly common across East Africa. She cited prior cases, stating: "We have seen Aaron go to court for Besigye and not return home.
Ssemakadde said: "Mr Lukwago doesn't need our pity. " He described the moment as a test between the rule of law and militarism. The Uganda Law Society is considering strategic litigation and engagement with regional and international bar associations to protect lawyers and defend judicial independence.
