UK Allows Households to Self-Install Plug-In Solar Panels After Rule Change
A government rule change now lets UK households install plug-in solar panels without professional help. Retailers and ministers met to prepare for rollout expected in coming months.
londontheinside.comA UK Government rule change earlier this year now permits households to self-install plug-in solar panels without paying installation fees. The panels can be placed in any outdoor space and generate free electricity. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey met representatives from Amazon, Asda, B&Q, Currys, Screwfix and Lidl to discuss the panels.
A consultation has been launched to confirm safety measures before rollout, which is expected in the coming months. ” Bell stated that B&Q is working closely with Government and suppliers to understand and help shape the guidance for plug-in solar panels. Georgina Hall, corporate affairs director at Lidl GB, said Lidl GB supports modernising regulations for plug-and-play technology.
She said establishing a clear framework could unlock a low-cost route for people to reduce energy bills. In 2025, 269,000 solar installations were completed in the UK, a 37 per cent increase from the previous year. Ninety-five per cent of those installations were on rooftops, with one solar installation occurring every two minutes.
The UK Government states that rooftop solar can bring savings of up to £480 a month.
