UK Asylum Appeals Backlog Reaches 44,000 Years

Waiting times for asylum appeals in UK courts have reached a cumulative total of 44,000 years, according to figures reported by GB News. There are currently 38,866 asylum claims awaiting processing. The average wait for an appeal judgment has reached 14 months over the past two years.

The 38,866 claims do not include more than 87,000 appeals filed to overturn rejected asylum applications through April of this year, a 70 percent increase from the previous year.

House court carries a backlog equivalent to 10,888 years, while Manchester Piccadilly holds 7,412 years, making these the two least efficient asylum courts in Britain. Immigration and asylum appeals cost taxpayers £80 million annually. A government spokesman stated the administration does not recognize this interpretation of the figures and noted a 72 percent reduction in the number of people waiting for an initial decision from a peak of 175,000.

Mahmood has announced plans to replace asylum judges with an independent appeals body. A government spokesman said the Home Secretary has proposed the most sweeping immigration reforms in modern times to speed up the appeals process. Conservative MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke said the system is inefficient and that leaving the European Convention on Human Rights would be required to change it.
