The UK Covid Inquiry published its fourth report today, detailing the vaccination programme's scale and impact, including prevention of nearly half a million deaths. The report also recommends increasing Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme awards and removing disability thresholds for claimants.
koreaherald.comThe UK Covid Inquiry published its fourth report today, providing a detailed assessment of the country's Covid-19 vaccination programme and related health measures. The 274-page report confirms that the vaccination rollout prevented hundreds of thousands of deaths.
The inquiry highlights that around 130 million Covid vaccine doses were administered in the UK within one year, with more than nine in 10 people aged over 12 immunised.
This programme was the largest immunisation effort in UK history and saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Vaccines were developed and completed clinical trials within months rather than years, enabling rapid deployment. To increase vaccine uptake, pop-up clinics were established in community centres and faith settings, and the NHS and government collaborated with local community leaders to address vaccine hesitancy.
In June 2021, the government announced a vaccine mandate for care workers in England, which was later extended to all health and care staff but subsequently scrapped before implementation. The report also covers the use of dexamethasone, which began in UK hospitals in June 2020 within hours of trial results confirmation.
By March 2021, dexamethasone had saved 22,000 lives in the UK and one million globally.
Regarding vaccine-related injury claims, more than 20,000 Covid-related claims were made to the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme, with about 1% resulting in one-off tax-free awards of £120,000. The inquiry recommends raising the maximum payout and abolishing the 60 per cent disability requirement for claimants.
The report includes individual cases such as a man from Newcastle-Under-Lyme who died from complications linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine in 2021.
Another case involves a man who experienced severe symptoms 10 days after receiving the AstraZeneca jab in April 2021.
