UK drivers received 10,054 penalty-point endorsements in 2025 for operating vehicles with mechanical defects, GB News reported. The total marked a drop of 3,055 from the 13,109 endorsements recorded in 2024. Faulty tyres accounted for 6,670 of the 2025 endorsements.
The remaining 3,384 covered defects in steering, brakes and other mechanical systems. Each offence carries three points that stay on a licence for four years, with fines for defective tyres reaching up to £2,500 per tyre. Scotland recorded the highest regional figure with 1,244 endorsements.
London followed with 1,182, then Yorkshire and the Humber with 995, the West Midlands with 969 and the South East with 950. GB News reported that the RAC said the figures likely understate the problem because they capture only drivers stopped by police. The organisation noted that approximately 10 million MOT tests fail each year.
He added that bald tyres reduce grip, increase stopping distances and raise the risk of blowouts.
