Britain will close a sanctions loophole allowing Russian-origin refined fuels by early next year. The temporary import license introduced in May remains under bi-weekly review.
news.google.comThe British government announced on Friday, June 12, 2026, that imports of diesel and jet fuel refined from Russian crude in third countries will be banned no later than January 1, 2027. The move closes one of the remaining routes by which Russian oil products can still enter the UK market.
It builds on sanctions announced in May 2026 that prohibit the import of refined oil made from Russian crude, even if the refining occurred outside Russia.
At the time of the May announcement, London issued a temporary license allowing continued imports of diesel and jet fuel while supply chains adjusted. The current temporary license is subject to review every two weeks and could be terminated earlier than January 1, 2027, if market conditions allow.
Industry will receive at least four months' notice before any changes to the temporary license take effect.
The UK has already banned direct imports of Russian crude and refined products. Trade Minister Chris Bryant stated that the January 2027 deadline sends a "clear signal" that Britain intends to maintain maximum pressure on Russia's economy. The government also highlighted restrictions introduced in May 2026 on maritime services related to Russian LNG.
International sanctions have deprived Russia's economy of more than $450 billion since the invasion of Ukraine, according to the British government. London has sanctioned more than 3,300 individuals, companies, and vessels under its Russia sanctions regime.
