UK and France Sign £662 Million Security Deal Amid Ongoing Channel Crossings
The UK and France have agreed to a new £662 million deal to enhance border security along the French coast. The agreement aims to increase police presence and provide new equipment to address migrant crossings. Boats carrying migrants were observed launching from southern French beaches shortly after the deal was signed.
news.sky.comThe UK and France signed a £662 million security agreement on Thursday to strengthen efforts against migrant crossings in the English Channel. The deal, announced by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood during a visit to France, will provide funding over the next three years.
This is in addition to a previous £500 million three-year agreement. The agreement includes increasing the number of French border police from 700 to 1,100. It also funds new equipment, such as drones and a specialist boat to address vessels involved in crossings.
Mahmood stated that the measures would help tackle the activities of smuggling groups, though she noted there is no single solution to the issue.
carrying migrants were launched into the English Channel approximately 48 hours after the deal was signed. These launches occurred about 70 miles south of the Dunkirk area, near Hardelot, south of Boulogne-sur-Mer. This location is further south than the typical launch points around Calais and Dunkirk, where the distance to UK waters is shorter.
m. today. It reached UK waters five hours later and was intercepted by the Border Force vessel Defender. GB News reported counting 50 migrants from this boat as they were led to a processing center in Dover.
Several other launch attempts failed on Saturday. By late afternoon, another boat successfully launched from the same area south of Boulogne. The French patrol ship Abeille Normandie is monitoring this vessel, and the Border Force vessel Volunteer has been sent to intercept it upon entering UK waters.
A week ago, more than 250 migrants departed from beaches along the Belgian coast, marking a high number of crossings that day. Smuggling groups have previously used southern beaches but prefer northern areas for shorter crossings. Launches from further south increase time in the water and associated risks.
Reactions Reform UK has expressed opposition to providing additional funds to France for border security. The party continues to voice concerns about the approach to curbing Channel crossings. Mahmood described the agreement as beneficial for the UK and expected to have a positive impact.
