The UK government announced a $1.47 billion plan to build a national AI supercomputer and reduce reliance on foreign hardware. The package allocates more than $1 billion for the supercomputer itself and $530 million for hardware, including $200 million for specialist inference chips.

Priority in procurement will go to UK chip startups. The government identified Olix and Fractile as potential beneficiaries. Researchers and startups are scheduled to gain access beginning in 2030.

The measures form part of a wider UK effort to limit dependence on foreign AI products and services. Officials cited recent tensions between the US and European countries over issues including tariffs and immigration as factors increasing urgency. The European Union presented a similar technology sovereignty proposal the previous week.

The UK has also created AI growth zones with reduced regulatory barriers and launched a $675 million venture fund for domestic AI startups.

Bussey, CEO at Oxford Science Enterprises, said government willingness to award contracts to UK firms marks an important shift. He noted that a steady procurement pipeline could help retain innovative companies in the country. Keegan McBride, director of science and technology at the Tony Blair Institute, said the UK is focusing on specialized hardware niches rather than attempting to compete across the entire semiconductor sector.

He stated that success could create leverage if other companies come to depend on British chips.
