UK Government Borrowing in June Below Forecast but Year-to-Date Total Exceeds Projection

The UK government borrowed £16 billion in June, the Office for National Statistics reported on Monday. The figure came in £7.9 billion below the same month last year and £0.3 billion under the Office for Budget Responsibility forecast. Borrowing for the financial year to date reached £57.6 billion, £3.7 billion less than the prior year yet £2.7 billion above the OBR projection.
Public debt remained near £3 trillion. Debt interest payments totaled £11.8 billion in June, nearly one-third lower than June 2025 and the fourth-highest June amount on record. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey have pledged to follow existing fiscal rules on spending and borrowing while seeking any flexibility within them to address household costs.
Healey stated that fiscal credibility underpins economic stability and national security. The unemployment rate stayed at 4.9 percent from March to May. Regular earnings excluding bonuses rose 3.4 percent over the year, though private-sector wage growth fell below 3 percent for the first time since 2020.
