UK Government Extends Pub Hours to 05:00 for England World Cup Match

The UK government announced late Thursday that pubs can remain open until 05:00 BST on Monday for England's World Cup last-16 match against Mexico. Kick-off is scheduled for 01:00 BST, with the game expected to finish no earlier than 03:00. The National Police Chiefs' Council said the timing of the decision means officers will be taken away from other duties and work extended hours.

It noted that England's likely route through the tournament had been known for some time and asked fans to drink within sensible limits.

FIFA is considering moving the match forward to 19:00 BST on Sunday because of forecasts for thunderstorms and heavy rain at the current start time. A Downing Street spokeswoman said the government acted as quickly as possible after England's 2-1 win over DR Congo on Wednesday confirmed its place in the round of 16.

The government stated that earlier licensing extensions had not covered the possibility of England playing so late. Local Government Secretary Steve Reed told broadcasters the change was one of the fastest adjustments to licensing law in recent memory.

The British Beer and Pub Association and the Night Time Industries Association welcomed the extension. Greene King said more than 600 of its pubs will stay open, and Marston's said more than 400 will do the same. The UK Hospitality Union warned that short-notice staffing changes could pressure workers and increase risks of managing intoxicated or aggressive customers.

The TUC asked employers to consider flexible working arrangements for staff on Monday. Wetherspoons confirmed only five of its more than 800 pubs will open for the match. One landlady in Northamptonshire said she chose not to open because of staffing costs and concerns about noise in a residential area.
