The UK government plans to introduce new laws that would allow the Home Secretary to designate proxy groups as foreign intelligence services, even if the groups are unaware of the foreign country they are working for. This legislation, to be included in the King's Speech next week, aims to address antisemitic attacks on British soil believed to be linked to Iran, such as an arson attack in Hendon, London.

Under the laws, individuals involved could face up to 14 years in prison. The measures would provide proscription-like powers to ban groups like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to a report by The Times. Police and intelligence agencies would gain authority to disrupt proxy activities using counterterrorism-style measures.

Prosecutors could then investigate and charge individuals under section 3 of the National Security Act 2023.

The Islamist group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia has claimed responsibility for at least half a dozen antisemitic attacks against Jewish communities last month. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans of the Metropolitan Police stated that the force is investigating whether these attacks were conducted by Iranian proxies.

The announcements follow a recent arson attack at the site of a former synagogue in Tower Hamlets. On Monday, a 46-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of arson after an alleged attack on a memorial wall in Golders Green. Separately, 45-year-old Essa Suleiman appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court charged with two counts of attempted murder related to a Golders Green attack on two Jewish individuals.

The president of the East London Central Synagogue told GB News that not enough is being done to counteract antisemitism in the capital.

The Metropolitan Police announced the deployment of 100 extra officers to safeguard the Jewish community, merging neighborhood policing with specialist protection and counter-terrorism resources. This follows a statement by Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley that 300 more officers would be needed to address the rise in antisemitism.

The Home Office will provide the Metropolitan Police with £18 million to tackle antisemitic hate crime, plus an additional £4 million through a grant for community-led and charity work. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated that British Jews appear on the hate lists of extreme right-wing groups, Islamist terrorists, elements of the extreme left, and hostile state actors.

The spokesperson added that this convergence is concerning and that Jewish communities face daily risks as a result. The spokesperson emphasized that this focus does not mean deprioritizing other communities.

Protesters have gathered in Golders Green, stating that Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour party are not doing enough to combat antisemitism in Britain. The Metropolitan Police has also launched a review into a possible ban on pro-Palestine marches following an attack in Golders Green. Iran has denied involvement in violent activities on British soil amid the wave of antisemitic attacks.
