Fresher Atlantic air ended a week of record-breaking heat across the UK, bringing cooler temperatures and rain from Sunday onward. The spell peaked on Tuesday when London's Kew Gardens recorded 35.1C, the highest May temperature on record, while Cardiff's Bute Park reached 32.9C. Saturday still saw 30C before Sunday's drop to 24C.

Meteorological summer begins with lower temperatures in the first days of June. Areas of low pressure steered by a stronger jet stream will replace the earlier high-pressure setup. Rain is expected to develop across most of the country on Monday, with heavier falls possible in western regions. Tuesday is forecast to bring a mix of sunshine and heavy showers that may include thunder and lightning.

The UK Health Security Agency issued amber and yellow heat health alerts for much of England during the hot period. At least 14 people died after entering water during the heat, with additional fatalities reported in Kent, Oxfordshire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Warwickshire, Hampshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, Cornwall, north-east Scotland, and Pembrokeshire.

South East Water said increased demand during the hot weather caused supply problems. More than 600 homes in the Whitstable area have no running water, and about 3,400 more have low pressure or intermittent supply. Additional rain and stronger winds are forecast for Wednesday, with daytime highs between 15C and 20C.
