UK Information Commissioner John Edwards Resigns After Workplace Investigation

John Edwards resigned as UK Information Commissioner and chair of the Information Commissioner's Office effective immediately on 19 June 2026. Edwards, who had served in the post since January 2022, stepped back from his duties in February when the workplace investigation began.

The ICO completed its investigation on 10 June and concluded there was a case to answer, rendering the commissioner temporarily unable to act.

In a statement posted on his LinkedIn page, Edwards said he accepted that there had been occasions where he exercised poor judgement and made attempts at humour that were inappropriate and caused offence. He added that he disagreed with how the ICO's investigation had been carried out but accepted that his position had become untenable.

Edwards said he did not want to become a distraction from the ICO's work and had notified the UK government of his resignation as both commissioner and chair.

He stated he was proud of his own contributions and those of ICO staff, and that his commitment to the principles, values, and objectives that guided his professional life remained unchanged. The ICO is responsible for regulating AI in the UK, overseeing data protection regulation, and enforcing freedom of information law.

The ICO recently fined Reddit £14 million for unlawfully using children's personal information and failing to check users' ages adequately. Non-profit groups the Good Law Project and the Open Rights Group recently launched legal action challenging the ICO over its handling of public data complaints.
