UK Job Adverts Rise 11 Percent to 1.7 Million While Youth Unemployment Tops One Million

The UK job market recorded 1.7 million job adverts in June, according to data released by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. The total marked a 9 percent increase from May and an 11 percent rise from the same month a year earlier. The largest regional gains occurred in Anglesey, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and Cheshire.

Agriculture, retail and hospitality roles showed the strongest sector increases, which the confederation linked to summer seasonal hiring. Lorraine Laryea, the confederation’s chief standards officer, said firms were acting on long-held hiring plans.

She noted that vacancies had returned above pre-Gulf crisis levels while cautioning that seasonal effects from May bank holidays and summer activity in places such as Cornwall should be considered.

Laryea added that sustained recovery would require an economic plan that maintains business confidence after the arrival of a new prime minister. The Independent reported that a separate review earlier this year found Britain’s youth unemployment crisis costs the country £125 billion annually.

The number of young people out of work or education exceeded one million for the first time since 2013, a figure larger than the national education budget and nearly double defence spending.

Alan Milburn, the former Labour health secretary who led the review, said the idea that young people are not trying is a myth. He stated that opportunities for many in the 16-to-24 age group are shrinking rather than expanding.
