UK Prison Minister Holds 2050 Tech Brainstorm With Amazon, Google and Others on Future Justice System
Lord James Timpson met Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Palantir, IBM and Serco to explore a technology-enabled justice system. Minutes released under freedom of information laws show proposals for subcutaneous tracking and robotic officers.
Lord James Timpson, the prison minister, met representatives from Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Palantir, IBM and Serco to discuss a technology-enabled justice system. The round-table, organised by industry lobby group Tech UK, asked participants what a digital, data and technology-enabled justice system could look like in 2050.
One proposal put forward by tech firms suggested inserting microchips under prisoners’ skin for real-time monitoring of movement and health.
The same discussion included driverless vehicles to transport prisoners, AI-generated risk assessments and robotic prisoner officers able to contain offenders. Lord Timpson told the companies that once-in-a-generation reform is the only way to deal with the scale of the crisis, cut crime and speed up justice.
He said he wanted technology to play an integral role in handling current issues and making streets safer, adding that the meeting marked the start of a new conversation between his department and the tech sector.
A Ministry of Justice source described the session as a brainstorming exercise exploring radical ideas rather than official policy. The source said it was too early to comment on whether any of the proposals would be developed. Lord Timpson is the son of Sir John Timpson, founder of the service retailer Timpson.
Serco operates private prisons in the UK. The minutes were released after a freedom of information request.
