UK Raises Terrorism Threat Level to Severe After Stabbing Attack on Jewish Men in London

The UK government has raised the national terrorism threat level from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. This change follows a stabbing attack in London's Golders Green neighborhood that seriously injured two Jewish men. The decision was made by an independent intelligence body within the domestic security service.

The attack occurred on Wednesday, when a 45-year-old suspect stabbed two men, aged 34 and 76, in an area with a large Jewish community. Police declared the incident a terrorist attack. The suspect also faces charges related to an earlier knife attack that day in south London, where one person sustained minor injuries.

The suspect, Essa Suleiman, appeared in court on Friday charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of possessing a bladed article. He confirmed his name, date of birth, and address during the hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court.

Suleiman, born in Somalia and a British citizen since arriving in the UK as a child in the early 1990s, was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at the Central Criminal Court on May 15. Counterterrorism police stated that Suleiman was referred to the UK's Prevent program in 2020, which aims to stop individuals from becoming terrorists.

The referral was closed the same year. The third attempted murder charge relates to Ishmail Hussein, attacked earlier that day at his flat in Southwark. The domestic security service noted an elevated threat to Jewish and Israeli individuals and institutions amid the Middle East conflict.

It described a gradual increase in terrorist threats from Islamist and extreme right-wing sources, including attack planning and radicalization.

This is the first time the threat level has been raised to severe since November 2021, following incidents including a hospital bombing and the murder of a member of parliament. It was lowered to substantial in February 2022. The security service stated the rise was influenced by a significant volume and complexity of terrorist incidents across ideologies, not solely the Golders Green attack.

Officials have pledged additional security measures, including increased police patrols in Jewish communities and funding for protection. The Metropolitan Police commissioner stated that 300 extra officers are needed in London to address rising antisemitism.

He urged the public to remain alert and report information. Another expert from a counter-extremism organization noted that the UK faces threats from multiple sources, including state-linked actors, radicalized Islamists, and left-wing extremists. The government has committed 25 million pounds to enhance security for Jewish communities and to strengthen powers against state-sponsored proxy groups.

Protests have highlighted concerns over rising antisemitic violence. Sources reported that the attack is part of a series targeting Jewish sites since the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. One source linked it to a war involving Iran, but multiple outlets confirmed the broader context of increased threats to Jewish communities in the UK and overseas.
