UK Rejects Iraqi-Born Man's Citizenship Bid but Leaves Him in Britain

The Home Office rejected the British citizenship application of an Iraqi-born man in February 2026 after determining he failed the statutory good character test, GB News reported. The man, identified in court documents as CT and born in Iraq in 1976, had applied for naturalisation by 2021. He has five children, three of whom are British citizens.

Officials informed him that disclosure of the reasons would not be in the public interest. CT challenged the refusal at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission. The commission upheld the Home Secretary's decision after examining national security evidence that was not shown to CT or the public.

It concluded the decision had a lawful basis and ruled that no further information could safely be disclosed to the press. GB News reported that the Security Service had alleged CT supported the insurgency in Iraq, received terrorist training, and was associated with Islamist extremists linked to Ansar al-Islam. The group has used remote-controlled vehicles for attacks.

Earlier proceedings described CT as a leading figure in Islamist extremist circles in Peterborough who allegedly preached hate at a local mosque and maintained criminal links. Investigators found evidence on seized material of CT's access to websites advertising remote-controlled helicopters, cars and pinhole cameras. A search of his home recovered a large remote-controlled car.

These allegations contributed to his placement under anti-terror control orders in the mid-2000s. CT has consistently denied all allegations. His lawyers argued there was no proper evidential basis for the citizenship refusal and that the process was unfair.
