A UK-sanctioned LNG tanker made a 12-hour stop off the northern Norwegian port of Honningsvåg a week ago. The vessel, named Clean Ocean, is linked to Russia's Arctic gas trade. The UK sanctioned it in October 2025 over those connections.

Ship tracking data reviewed by High North News showed the stop on Tuesday. Russia has used sanctioned tankers to move LNG from Arctic export projects to buyers who accept the risk. The U.S., UK, and EU have sanctioned such carriers along with the Arctic LNG 2 project operated by Novatek.

"The Clean Ocean is not just another LNG tanker. It is a UK-sanctioned vessel linked to the transport of Russian fossil fuels," Sebastian Rötters, sanctions campaigner at Urgewald, told High North News. "If a ship sanctioned by Britain can still appear to receive logistical support off Norway, then serious questions need to be asked about whether sanctions are being enforced," Rötters added.
