UK Study Finds Links Between Lifestyle Factors, Sense of Purpose, and Lower Mental Health Risks in Young People

The lead author stated that the study shows how the presence or absence of meaning in life is associated with mental health. The author added that young people in the UK are under increasing pressure, with traditional life milestones moving later or becoming less relevant, and their mental health suffering.
Researchers aimed to examine factors leading to a greater sense of meaning or predisposing individuals to search for it.
A female participant stated: 'My entire meaning of life is to live for my children. I got my fulfilment through having to immediately finish GCSEs, go straight to university, get a job, buy a house very quickly - everything came very fast just from having to set down roots very early on. ' She described how her connection with her children boosted her wellbeing despite early life challenges.
A male participant, enrolled in the project at birth, stated that he gained meaning in life by helping others, was inspired to become a blood donor, and aimed to do the maximum amount of help to the maximum amount of people to the best of his capability.
He added: 'I've come to realise that it could be a chicken and an egg sort of thing where Children of the 90s inspired me to help others. ' His involvement in the study influenced his commitment to donations.
