Ukraine Aims for 200 Russian Casualties per Square Kilometer Captured
Ukrainian officials stated they seek to inflict at least 200 Russian casualties for every square kilometer of territory captured by Russian forces. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported rising Russian losses per kilometer in recent months.
Ukrainian officials stated they seek to inflict at least 200 Russian casualties for every square kilometer of territory captured by Russian forces. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said this target has been met or exceeded in recent months as Russian advances have slowed.
Fedorov told reporters that Russian losses per square kilometer rose from 67 in October 2025 to 165 in January, 244 in February, 254 in March, and 179 in April. He added that Russian forces suffered 35,203 casualties in April alone.
Fedorov attributed the increase in Russian casualties to Ukraine's use of mid-range strike drones and to the loss of Starlink satellite service for Russian forces after February. He said Ukraine has begun procuring more mid-strike drones, which have become a key advantage on the front line.
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War assessed that Russian forces lost control of 116 square kilometers in April, marking the first net territorial loss for Russia since late 2024. The same analysts reported that Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine fell below 20 percent by March 2026.
A senior UK military advisor stated that Russia has accumulated roughly 1.3 million battlefield losses since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated Ukrainian casualties at 500,000 to 600,000 during the same period.
Ukrainian officials have signaled plans to increase the use of robotic systems and drones for logistics and other missions near the front lines.
