Ukrainian forces launched drone strikes on Russia's Primorsk oil port on the Baltic Sea, sparking a fire that local authorities extinguished without causing an oil spill. The port, operated by Russia's state oil firm Transneft, handles hundreds of thousands of barrels per day and lies over 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine.

Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko reported the incident, noting more than 60 drones were downed in the region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces also hit two tankers near the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. He said the operation was led by the chief of Ukraine's general staff, Andrii Hnatov, and that the tankers belonged to Russia's shadow fleet used to evade Western sanctions.

Moscow did not immediately acknowledge the claims.

Ministry reported downing 334 Ukrainian drones overnight over Russia and occupied Crimea. In the Moscow region, officials said six drones were shot down, and at least five more were downed approaching the capital. A Ukrainian drone strike west of Moscow killed a 77-year-old man near the town of Volokolamsk, according to Moscow Governor Andrei Vorobyov.

The attacks reflect a recent increase in Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, which Kyiv says funds Moscow's invasion.

These tankers were actively used to transport oil. Now they won’t.

in Ukraine Russian drone strikes killed two people and wounded three others in Ukraine's Odesa region, damaging three residential buildings and port infrastructure. The strikes also killed one person in the Kherson region. In central Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, nighttime Russian strikes wounded six people and damaged a passenger bus carrying 40 children, though no one inside was injured.

Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 269 drones and ballistic missiles overnight, with Ukrainian forces downing 249 drones. Hits from ballistic missiles and 19 drones were recorded in 15 locations. The air force noted that the attacks targeted various regions, including front-line areas.

Primorsk port has been targeted multiple times in recent months, including in March. The facility, located between the Russian-Finnish border and St. Petersburg, is one of Russia's largest oil export gateways with a capacity of one million barrels per day.

Ukrainian officials argue that targeting oil infrastructure disrupts revenue funding Russia's invasion, now in its fifth year. Both sides have exchanged hundreds of drones daily throughout the four-year war. In eastern Ukraine, Russian troops advanced toward the city of Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region, according to Ukraine's top army official.

Separately, an elderly woman was rescued using an unmanned ground vehicle in Donetsk Oblast.

Ukraine’s long-range capabilities will continue to be developed comprehensively – at sea, in the air, and on land.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, May 3, 2026 (Al Jazeera)

The mutual accusations of civilian killings came as U.S.-brokered talks to end the war have stalled. Ukraine's emergency service reported the Odesa attacks damaged facilities and equipment at key export terminals.
