Ukraine Raises Pay and Extends Contracts for Foreign Infantry

Ukraine revised its military compensation plan last month to increase monthly pay for foreign infantry and assault troops to an average of UAH 300,000. Contracts now range from six to 14 months. Officials aim to fill 30-50 percent of these positions with foreign recruits.

The plan sets average monthly compensation at UAH 300,000, or nearly $7,000, and allows payments up to UAH 460,000, or over $10,000, based on days spent at the front.

Ukraine's defense minister described the rates as the highest salaries in the world for infantry. A company commander of the volunteer unit Chosen said higher pay and longer contracts could increase the number of foreign fighters who stay for a year or more.

The commander added that many foreign fighters have historically left after the six-month minimum, limiting the return on training and equipment costs. A foreign fighter identified by call sign Kante said fewer ideologically motivated volunteers remain and that Ukraine now competes for experienced fighters on pay.

The fighter said the compensation must match what fighters can earn in other conflicts, such as Sudan. The defense minister stated that the current salary level is already drawing more foreigners and that further increases would strengthen the front line.
