Ukrainian officials reported that supplies of Patriot PAC-3 interceptors have been exhausted, reducing the ability to counter Russian ballistic missile attacks. During Russia's most recent large-scale strike, officials said 23 ballistic missiles and six 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missiles reached their targets.
Air defenses intercepted 37 cruise missiles and 326 drones in the same attack. Officials attributed the difference in interception rates to the shortage of PAC-3 interceptors, one of the few systems designed to defeat ballistic missiles.
The shortage coincides with increased global demand for Patriot interceptors. U.S. inventories have been drawn down by commitments elsewhere. Russia has placed greater emphasis on ballistic missile strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure as a result of the reported interceptor shortfall.
