Ukrainian drones struck the Moscow region overnight, killing at least three people and wounding more than a dozen others, Russian regional officials said Sunday. A woman died in Khimki after a drone hit her home, and two people were killed in the village of Pogorelki, Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyev said.

One man died after a drone struck a truck in the Belgorod region bordering Ukraine, local authorities reported.

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 12 people were injured near the entrance to the city's oil refinery, with three nearby houses damaged. Debris from a downed drone fell on Sheremetyevo airport grounds without injuring anyone or disrupting flights. India's embassy in Moscow reported that an Indian worker was killed in the Moscow region and three other Indian nationals were hospitalized.

"

Our responses to Russia's prolongation of the war and attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Telegram post, May 17, 2026 (BBC News)

Russian air defenses intercepted 556 drones across Russia, Crimea, and the Black Sea, the Defense Ministry said. In the Moscow region alone, 130 drones were shot down.

Russia launched 287 drones into Ukraine overnight, with Ukrainian forces intercepting 279 of them. Eight people were injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where residential buildings were damaged. Zelenskyy said Ukraine had struck oil facilities and a semiconductor plant in the Moscow region, plus air defense systems at Belbek airfield in Crimea.
