Ukraine is converting reconnaissance and attack drones into logistics carriers to reduce soldier exposure in high-risk zones near the front line.
Ukrainian forces are using drones originally designed for reconnaissance and attack missions to deliver supplies to front-line soldiers. The shift comes as routes to positions near the front have become so exposed to surveillance and attack drones that human supply runs carry extreme risk. The Linza drone, manufactured by Frontline Robotics, is used by more than 60 Ukrainian units.
0 model in 2026. 0 model can carry 4 kilograms over 15 kilometers, compared with the previous model's capacity of 2 kilograms over 10 kilometers. The heavy bomber "Max" drone, manufactured by Perun, is now being used for logistics missions in addition to dropping explosives.
Perun told Business Insider's Jake Epstein at an undisclosed location inside Ukraine that the drone is increasingly performing supply runs. Ukraine's defense minister stated in April 2026 that the goal is to hand over 100% of frontline logistics to robotic systems.
At the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, approximately 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers were responsible for about 10 kilometers of front line, according to Rozhkov of Frontline Robotics.
Ukrainian armed forces aim to reduce the number of soldiers needed per 10 kilometers of front line to 150, with unmanned systems performing much of the work. Ukrainian officials describe a "kill zone" as wide as 50 kilometers in some places near the front line due to dense networks of surveillance and attack drones.
"That's because the logistics are almost shut down on the actual engagement line," Rozhkov said, referring to the most exposed area near the front.
Frontline Robotics manufactures a weapons turret that can be mounted on ground robots to fire machine guns and grenade launchers. Frontline Robotics is actively developing technology allowing one operator to control multiple drones simultaneously. Rozhkov said soldiers have asked for autonomy features so multiple drones can be controlled by a single pilot.
President Zelenskyy stated in September 2025 that Ukrainian companies are working on drones that can shoot down other drones. Rozhkov said Frontline is "actively working" toward a future where uncrewed systems fight other uncrewed systems.
