Ukrainian Naval Drone Detonates in Romania’s Port of Constanta

A maritime drone exploded in Romania's eastern port of Constanta on Friday morning. The device self-detonated at 10:30 local time and caused no injuries. Romanian officials said law enforcement and security services responded before the blast.

Ukraine's navy said the drone had been knocked off course by Russian jamming. A source identified the device as a maritime drone used in the war in Ukraine. The Constanta explosion follows a Russian drone crash into an apartment building in Galati one week earlier.

The two events are the latest in a series of drone incursions into NATO member states since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on X that the incident was a direct consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine.

She added that such events are increasingly becoming a direct threat to countries on the EU's eastern border.

European Council President António Costa posted on X offering full solidarity with Romania and condemning repeated violations of member states' airspace. Romanian President Nicușor Dan said law enforcement and security services acted quickly before the explosion. He stated the incident is a direct consequence of the war of aggression unleashed by Russia against Ukraine.

"With a military conflict on the border, it is obvious that the security environment we are in is a sensitive one, which is why we will maintain a high level of vigilance," Nicușor Dan said on June 5, 2026.
