Ukrainian Ultimatum to Belarus Prompts Beijing Endorsement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an ultimatum to Belarus in mid-June 2026, demanding that Minsk immediately cease support for Russian military operations or face drone strikes. Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko stated that Minsk did not want to be drawn into the war and traveled to Beijing, where he secured an endorsement of Belarus’ sovereignty and territorial integrity from Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping.

Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have expressed concerns about being drawn into the Ukrainian conflict.

Their representatives stated that any decision to activate the CSTO military assistance clause would require parliamentary approval, and an unnamed Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry official added that an act of aggression by Ukraine against Belarus would need formal recognition through a UN or Security Council resolution before the CSTO could respond.

Armenia held a parliamentary vote on June 7, 2026, in which Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan was reelected. Russia had imposed import bans on a variety of Armenian food products before the vote, citing quality control standards.

Armenian officials assert that the country is finding new markets for the affected goods. Kazakhstan, a full member of the EAEU, was considering a blanket six-month ban on wheat imports, including from other EAEU members. The CSTO charter contains an attack-against-one-is-an-attack-on-all provision, and Belarus remains a CSTO member.
